Gojo Hill. In old Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, this is the place of origin of the emblematic Japanese ceramic art, Kiyomizu Ware. Even now, nestled in this neighborhood of kilns and ceramic workshops sits T. Nishikawa & Co., Inc.
Since being founded in 1917, our company has operated as both a manufacturer and seller of Kiyomizu Ware and an exporter of the traditional handicrafts of Kyoto.
Our founder, Teisaburo Nishikawa, pioneered the introduction of Kiyomizu Ware and other traditional handicrafts to the world. The continuation of that business, handed down first to Keitaro Nishikawa and finally to Kayoko Nishikawa, persists now in Asia, Europe, the United States and other places, as our business has reached every corner of the world.
Today, we deal in Kiyomizu Ware as well as ceramics, lacquer ware, cast iron ware, tea utensils, antiques, kimonos and a wide diversity of other objects from all over Japan.
Every object carries its own unique story and meaning. However, at the same time, in each object may be felt the impression of community.
This is the idiosyncrasy of the town known as Kyoto, as well as the individuality of T. Nishikawa & Co., Inc.
Since olden times, Kyoto has served as a gathering place for both people and objects, the exchange of which has nurtured a rich culture. There exists here a unique and yet somehow diverse "Kyoto-ness".
Examples of this spirit include the execution of handsome and thorough design work, a jewel of technique that the Kyoto artisan has honed across many generations.
Or the unlimited expression born from the overlapping of glazes, which, in the world of the tea ceremony, is patterned after the easily shifting scenery of Japan itself.
Or the audacious combinations of color and form that inspire delight; they embody the spirit of Kyoto's ancient leaders, who dressed boldly and with discernment as a display of hospitality.
People, nature and also objects may all truly breathe with the essence of Kyoto. At T. Nishikawa & Co., Inc., to communicate the experience of "Kyoto-ness" through the objects that have helped to birth Japan's rich traditional culture gives us the greatest pleasure.
